About CIPF
The Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF) is an organization that provides limited protection to eligible clients if a member investment dealer becomes insolvent. Its mandate is custodial: it works to help return eligible client property held by the insolvent firm, subject to applicable limits. Covered property may include securities and cash, while cryptoassets are excluded. The fund does not protect against other types of investment risk or loss.
CIPF members are investment dealers and mutual fund dealers that belong to the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization. The fund offers resources to help investors understand eligibility, coverage limits, member firms, and the claims administration process. Its website also provides insolvency case studies, information about recent insolvencies, frequently asked questions, and updates for investors and industry participants.
CIPF supports its work through governance structures, including a board and committees, and publishes its internal rules and conduct policies. It also describes its role within Canada’s regulatory system and its collaboration with domestic and international organizations.
