FECOA

FECOA, the Federación Costarricense de Atletismo (Costa Rican Athletics Federation), established in 1960, is responsible for overseeing the practice of athletics in the country. Costa Rica hosts numerous tournaments across all athletic specialties, with many Costa Rican athletes competing in international events, particularly in long-distance and middle-distance disciplines. Historically, athletics has brought international success to Costa Rica, with notable victories such as Rafael Ángel Pérez Córdoba winning the San Silvestre marathon in Brazil (1974) and the San Blas de Illescas marathon in Coamo, Puerto Rico (1976).

Pérez is widely regarded as the greatest figure in Costa Rican athletics history. Additionally, José Luis Molina Núñez's triumph in the Los Angeles marathon (1996) was another significant milestone for Costa Rican marathon running. FECOA not only regulates athletics but also supports a diverse range of athletes striving for excellence in national and international competitions.
