This is the official information page for National Fentanyl Awareness Day, dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Sadly, it is involved in more deaths of Americans under 50 than any other cause of death. Astonishingly, 73% of teenagers have never even heard of fake prescription pills made with fentanyl.
Illicitly manufactured fentanyl is being mixed with common drugs like Oxy, Percocet, and Xanax by drug dealers to increase profits. It has also been found in party drugs like cocaine and MDMA. The production process is unregulated and lacks quality control, putting users at significant risk of poisoning and overdose. Alarmingly, even just two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal.
To combat this crisis, education is key. If you're a parent, initiate a conversation with your family about fentanyl. Educators can start the conversation in the classroom using free lesson plans available. Be prepared by knowing the signs of an overdose, carrying naloxone, and testing products for fentanyl. Spread the word and join the National Fentanyl Awareness Day coalition to make an impact. Together, we can protect our communities and save lives.
