La Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles tiene la misión de promover el conocimiento y la utilizaciónn del ferrocarril mediante actuaciones orientadas al servicio de la ciudanía: culturales, de investigación y formación, tecnológicas, de conservación, recuperación y uso alternativo del patrimonio cultural ferroviario, publicaciones periódicas y libros especializados, así como a través de la gestión y conservación de los Museos del Ferrocarril de Madrid y de Cataluña y de su patrimonio documental a través de la Biblioteca Ferroviaria y el Archivo Histórico Ferroviario.
