A Business Doing Pleasure is the research and storytelling project of Dr. Heather Branstetter, exploring the history of Wallace, Idaho, and the social and economic forces that shaped the town. Titled Selling Sex in the Silver Valley, 1884–1991, the project traces Wallace’s evolution from a major silver-producing center to a community also known for gambling and prostitution.
Drawing on previously unpublished archival materials and oral histories, Branstetter examines how residents understood and regulated sex work, and how local beliefs connected it to public morality, safety, and the economy. The work also highlights the madams’ unusual influence as businesswomen, community leaders, and philanthropists, while considering the changes that pushed sex work underground elsewhere. Through a book, project updates, essays, interviews, media features, and a short documentary, A Business Doing Pleasure shares this complex history without reducing it to a sensational tale.
Branstetter is a Silver Valley native, scholar, and executive director of the Historic Wallace Preservation Society, bringing local knowledge and academic research to the story of Wallace’s changing identity
