FirstGen Forward

FirstGen Forward is a national organization working to improve college success and graduation outcomes for first-generation students. It brings together hundreds of higher education institutions, practitioners, scholars, foundations, businesses, and advocates to help close the completion gap and strengthen support for students and graduates.

The organization’s initiatives include the FirstGen Forward Network, which connects institutions committed to advancing first-generation student success, and the annual First-Generation College Celebration, which promotes an asset-based understanding of students’ experiences. FirstGen Forward also publishes the Journal of First-generation Student Success and shares research, national data, landscape reports, and practical resources to inform institutional decision-making.

For higher education professionals and leaders, its offerings include professional development webinars, on-demand learning, conferences, and other events. Students can find guidance on understanding their generational status and preparing for college, while policymakers and advocates can access information to support their work. Through its impact reporting, insights, learning opportunities, and partnerships, FirstGen Forward helps institutions turn evidence and commitment into stronger outcomes for first-generation students.
