About First Mate Academy
First Mate Academy provides hands-on marine education and fishing instruction for young anglers and aspiring captains. Based at Speckled Trout Marina in Palm Harbor, Florida, the academy’s programs are led by USCG Captains and emphasize confidence, practical skills, safety, and respect for the water.
Its summer camps serve ages 8–17, with species-themed weeks focused on Snook, Tarpon, and the Inshore Slam. Camps run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with lunch included. Year-round academy programs offer curriculum-based sessions for the same age group, where participants can earn First Mate certifications alongside experienced captains. For older students and emerging professionals, advanced training is available from age 15, with development programs for aspiring instructors and captains.
Families can also book charters, join through membership options, and shop through the academy’s online store. With more than 500 anglers served and a stated 100% safety record, First Mate Academy aims to help today’s young mates build the knowledge and enthusiasm to become tomorrow’s captains.
