The Status of Australian Fish Stocks (SAFS) Reports are a national resource providing scientifically robust, transparent assessments of the sustainability of Australia’s wild-capture fish stocks. The 2024 edition is the sixth and most comprehensive assessment, bringing together biological, catch and fishing-effort information to evaluate key species and stocks. Since 2018, SAFS summary data has also supported Australia’s reporting on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal indicator 14.4.1, which tracks the proportion of fish stocks at biologically sustainable levels.
The reports assess 155 species across 503 individual stocks, with findings presented by species, jurisdiction and seafood group, including molluscs, crustaceans, sharks and finfish. Users can search species, explore interactive data tools, review key results and download current or previous reports. The site also offers information about assessment methods, fishing methods, authors, references and terminology. Its findings highlight the status of stocks across categories such as sustainable, depleted, recovering, depleting, negligible and undefined. Additional resources direct seafood consumers to fisheries research, seafood information, the Australian Fish Names Database and seafood standards.
