About Flagstaff Dark Skies
The Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition (FDSC) is a dedicated organization committed to preserving the stunning, dark night skies of Flagstaff and Northern Arizona. Established in 1999, and recognized as the First International Dark-Sky City in 2001, FDSC advocates for best practices in outdoor lighting that balances safety and environmental sustainability while significantly reducing light pollution. With a mission to celebrate, promote, and protect the beauty of the night sky, the Coalition organizes public events such as the Flagstaff Star Party to raise awareness and appreciation for astronomy.
FDSC provides expert guidance on residential and commercial lighting solutions to help communities decrease light pollution and embrace dark sky practices. They offer resources on policy, science, and effective processes to encourage other regions to follow Flagstaff’s leadership in dark sky protection. By uniting members and local organizations, FDSC strives to inspire global efforts toward maintaining the beauty of the night sky, ensuring that the stars remain visible to all.
