The Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project (FWPP) is a vital community initiative aimed at enhancing the resilience of local watersheds against the threats of severe wildfires and subsequent flooding. Established following the approval of a $10 million bond by Flagstaff voters in November 2012, the project is a collaborative effort involving the State, City, and Coconino National Forest. FWPP's mission focuses on reducing fire risks in the Rio de Flag and Lake Mary watersheds, promoting ecological health and safety for the community.
The project provides various services, including forest restoration and extensive monitoring efforts to assess fire behavior and hydrologic responses, along with socioeconomic impacts. With resources such as an interactive map, biannual reports, and community outreach programs, FWPP engages residents and stakeholders in conservation efforts. For inquiries or to stay updated on FWPP’s progress, community members can reach out through the Flagstaff Ranger District or the Flagstaff Fire Department. Together, they work towards ensuring a safer, healthier environment for all.
