The Florida Springs Institute, based in High Springs, FL, is a brand dedicated to the preservation and understanding of the Floridan Aquifer and the springs it feeds. With over 1,000 springs, the Floridan Aquifer is a vital source of water for natural and human systems in Florida. As the largest concentration of springs in the world, these water sources have a significant impact on the state, with 21 million people residing in Florida and over 100 million visiting each year.
To assess the impact of human activities on the Floridan Aquifer, the Florida Springs Institute has developed the Blue Water Audit. By utilizing various data sources, this project estimates and visualizes the impacts of nitrate-nitrogen pollution and groundwater withdrawals on the aquifer. The Blue Water Audit also assigns Aquifer Footprints, summarizing the estimated impact of nitrogen loading and groundwater withdrawals on water quality and quantity.
Through their research and analysis, the Florida Springs Institute aims to educate and raise awareness about the importance of protecting the Floridan Aquifer, ensuring the sustainability of Florida's springs and water resources
