Available for free on iOS and Android, it uses a map initially covered in fog, which clears as users walk through streets, parks, and trails. Explored areas remain uncovered, creating a personal record of places visited on foot and showing how much of each city, region, or country has been explored.

Every step earns experience points that help users level up and unlock perks, including a larger reveal radius and fog-busting tools. Progress is permanent, encouraging people to keep walking, discover new routes, and build on their achievements over time. Users can also invite friends to join a shared leaderboard and compare activity, adding a friendly competitive element to daily walks.

Fogbreaker works with a phone’s GPS and motion sensors, so a wearable is not required, though the app can work with one. The company describes the app as privacy-focused, ad-free, built and hosted in the EU, and used in more than 90 countries.
