About Folk Heritage
Shindig on the Green and the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival are two iconic events that celebrate the rich heritage of traditional mountain music and dance in Asheville, NC. Organized by the Folk Heritage Committee, these festivals have been running since 1928, making them the longest-running folk festivals in the country. The mission of the Folk Heritage Committee is to preserve and present the musical heritage of the Southern Appalachians to audiences from across the region and the world, providing both entertainment and education.
These festivals attract dedicated performers and enthusiastic attendees who come together to experience the vibrant culture and traditions of the area. The committee, consisting of 16 dedicated community volunteers, works tirelessly throughout the year to ensure the success of these festivals. They represent a wide range of skills and talents and are deeply involved in the music and dance communities of the region.
As an independent organization, the Folk Heritage Committee relies on fundraising efforts to produce these festivals. They do not receive funds from the Community Betterment Foundation or Chamber of Commerce, but instead raise funds through sponsorships, donations, and the support of the community. To get involved, individuals can volunteer to help, make a donation, or support the festivals through sponsorship opportunities.
Those interested in contacting the Folk Heritage Committee can do so through their website or by leaving a message at the provided Info Line number.
