The Martin Bodmer Foundation is a cultural institution in Cologny, Geneva, combining a heritage library, a research and conservation centre, and a museum devoted to the written word from the origins of writing to the present day. Its library was founded in 1951, and the Foundation was established in 1971. Recognised in UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme, it preserves and shares collections spanning around five millennia of written history.
The museum welcomes the public to a permanent exhibition tracing the development of civilisation through a chronological journey, alongside temporary exhibitions exploring literature and its forms. Visitors can also join guided tours, take part in activities and events, and browse the museum shop. The Foundation’s library is accessible exclusively to researchers, while its wider work includes collection care, conservation and restoration, research, and digitisation.
