Stemming from the inspiration of Professor Alberto Martini and Professor Nicolino Ruperto in 1996, in 2020 the non-profit organization PRINTO (Paediatric Rheumatology INternational Trials Organisation) developed into a legal entity, notably a charity called Fondazione PRINTO ETS. Now based in Monza (Italy), Fondazione PRINTO counts on the cooperation of clinical research centres worldwide. Fondazione PRINTO's primary goal is to foster, facilitate and coordinate the development of multi-centre, international clinical trials, outcome standardisation, clinical and basic science studies in children with rheumatic diseases. Fondazione PRINTO acts as an international academic research service to the paediatric rheumatology community for the implementation of non-profit trials and other studies initiated by investigators (consensus projects, cross-cultural adaptation of questionnaires, training, standardized information for families, etc.). Many projects coordinated by the network have been funded by the European Union or other public and private entities. As a result of academic initiatives, more than 45,000 patients have been enrolled from about 239 centres in 54 different countries. Moreover, Fondazione PRINTO actively supports the training of young researchers in paediatric rheumatology through different education fellowship programs.

Fondazione PRINTO ETS is a non-profit international research network dedicated to improving care and outcomes for children with rheumatic diseases. Founded in 1996, the organisation coordinates clinical research, education and collaboration across 95 countries, bringing together more than 2,000 members and 729 clinical centres. Its network has enrolled over 45,000 patients and contributed to more than 300 publications.
PRINTO fosters and supports multinational clinical trials, outcome standardisation, and clinical and basic science studies. It provides academic research services to the paediatric rheumatology community, helping investigators carry out non-profit trials, consensus projects, questionnaire adaptations and other studies. The foundation also offers fellowship and training programmes for young researchers.
Working with families and patient associations, PRINTO helps ensure research reflects children’s needs. With the Pediatric Rheumatology European Society, it provides an online platform featuring reliable disease information in more than 50 languages. PRINTO also partners with pharmaceutical companies on paediatric investigation plans, study protocols, site identification and independent assessment of trial outcomes.
