The Gramsci Foundation, founded in 1950, preserves and promotes archives recognized as being of significant historical interest by the Soprintendenza Archivistica e Bibliografica per il Lazio of the Italian Ministry of Culture. The Foundation makes its book collection, comprising over 200,000 volumes catalogued in the Italian National Library Service (SBN), available to users; carries out projects for the ordering, inventorying, digitization, and online publication of its archival and bibliographical heritage; promotes and develops thematic portals and digital libraries; publishes databases interoperable with the Italian National Archives System (SAN); promotes studies and research in political, social, and cultural history from the 19th to the 21st century; conducts editorial and research activities to support the editions and translations of Antonio Gramsci's writings; collaborates with Italian and foreign organizations and institutions that share similar inspirations and goals; periodically awards national and international scholarships and prizes; it carries out research projects in its fields of expertise; and conducts orientation and training activities for university students, recent graduates, and doctoral students. The Foundation organizes conferences, seminars, lectures, courses, exhibitions, training activities, cultural promotion activities in Italy and abroad; periodically awards scholarships; and publishes monographs, documentary collections, a journal of historical studies, a series "Gramsci Foundation. Books" and editorial work.
