ForES is a four-year sustainable forestry project that brings together Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and Coillte. This collaborative effort is funded by the Department of Agriculture and aims to develop tools for sustainable forestry management decision-making using the Natural Capital Accounting approach. Forestry not only provides timber but also supports biodiversity and offers other public benefits like carbon capture to combat climate change.

The ForES project aims to enable foresters to make robust and transparent management decisions by co-developing tools specifically designed to provide a sustainable supply of multiple benefits from Irish forests. Using Natural Capital Accounting, the project will quantify forest stocks and the flows of benefits at specific forest sites. This analysis will determine the quantity, quality, and location of forest stocks, as well as flows of commercial timber production, carbon sequestration, water retention, biodiversity, and recreation.

Different land management scenarios will be modeled to provide managers with the necessary information to meet multiple objectives at both site and estate levels. This innovative project combines Natural Capital Accounting with Bayesian Belief Network modeling to facilitate structured decision-making in an Irish context.
