Forealis

Aurora Forealis is a privately funded, non-profit foundation focused on large-scale, economically viable carbon capture as a public benefit. Its work began with an analysis of atmospheric carbon and emissions, leading the foundation to conclude that carbon removal will be essential because emissions are not declining quickly enough. It studies carbon capture technologies from first principles, considering the practical demands of scale, energy efficiency, and the mass of carbon that must be absorbed and stored.

This research led Aurora Forealis to focus on forests, particularly boreal forests, which it views as a promising opportunity for cost-effective carbon capture. The foundation examines how improved boreal silviculture could support carbon removal, with opportunities it identifies primarily in Russia, followed by Canada and the United States. It notes that captured carbon may cost less than USD 10 per ton in some cases, and that productive uses for cellulose, hemicellulose, or timber fibers can make costs negative.
