Fortepan is a community photo archive that offers a wide range of free, high-quality, and publicly accessible archival photographs. With over a hundred thousand images, you can browse and download photos for any purpose, all marked with the FORTEPAN / X. Y.

We kindly request that you always credit the original source of the image, as a way of showing appreciation for the selflessness of the original owners. Founded in 2010 by Szepessy Ákos and Tamási Miklós with five thousand mostly discarded photos, Fortepan has grown significantly with contributions from hundreds of families, amateur and professional photographers, and public collections. The selection of images on the website is curated by the editorial team, while volunteer editors provide descriptions based on information from the Fortepan Forum.
