About Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is a global effort that aims to foster international cooperation for a transition to clean energy and address the climate crisis. The initiative calls for an end to the expansion of coal, oil, and gas and an equitable phase-out of existing production. It is supported by a growing global network of governments, civil society organizations, academics, scientists, youth activists, health professionals, faith institutions, and Indigenous peoples.
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative complements other movements and tactics, such as divestment, debt relief, and fossil fuel bans. It also aligns with the work of the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance and the Power Past Coal Alliance. Despite the global climate target set by the Paris Agreement, many governments have continued to approve new fossil fuel projects, which would result in emissions seven times higher than what is compatible with keeping global warming below 1.
5ºC. The initiative aims for a fast and fair transition away from fossil fuels, leaving no worker, community, or country behind. By joining this global effort, individuals and organizations can contribute to the momentum and diplomatic support needed to address the urgent climate crisis
