Fourth Eon Biosecurity is an independent nonprofit institute focused on building adaptive biosecurity infrastructure for the age of engineered biology. Its mission is to research, develop, and deploy technologies that can detect and block engineered biological threats. The institute works across biological research, laboratory systems, and AI, aiming to strengthen safeguards as these capabilities evolve.
Its active programs address several parts of the biosecurity landscape. SCREEN develops, tests, and deploys function-based screening for nucleic acid and protein synthesis. SHIELD focuses on protocol-level biohazard detection for cloud laboratories and autonomous experimental platforms; its scoping phase is complete. INTERLOCK explores hardware- and firmware-level security for benchtop nucleic acid synthesis devices. SAFEGUARD develops function-based biosecurity constraints for biological AI models, large language models, and agents. THRESHOLD works on biosecurity capability evaluations and benchmarks for biological AI models.
Fourth Eon collaborates with researchers, funders, institutions, and organizations advancing adaptive biosecurity. It invites program proposals and lists requests for proposals for selected initiatives, offering a way for prospective partners to contribute to its work.
