FranceGenWeb is a French genealogy portal created by and for amateur genealogists. Run as an association-supported, volunteer-contributed resource, it helps visitors research family histories through free databases, local indexes, guides, and community assistance. Its collections cover records and subjects including civil acts, marriages, cemeteries, notaries, Protestant families, military history, mayors, and heraldry.

Visitors can search for a surname across multiple databases, explore information by department or region, and consult specialist resources such as paleography, historical photographs, and translation help. The portal also offers directories of archives, associations, and communes, alongside beginner guides, a genealogy FAQ, and a map of online archives. FranceGenWeb encourages collaboration through its help services, mailing lists, wiki, blog, and opportunities to contribute or support the association.

Many database entries are added or updated by volunteers, and the site provides information about privacy and responsible handling of members’ and contributors’ data. FranceGenWeb presents itself as a practical, community-led gateway to genealogical research in France
