The Franklin Area Folk Festival is a heritage event created by the Folk Heritage Association of Macon County (FHAMC), a nonprofit established in 2005 to preserve and share the culture and folkways of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. First launched in 2004, the festival showcased the everyday skills, crafts, music, and traditions of the region through hands-on demonstrations and living-history experiences. Held at Historic Cowee School in partnership with the Cowee School Arts & Heritage Center from 2016, it grew to feature more than 100 heritage demonstrations and Appalachian-focused vendors.

Its purpose was to educate visitors about local history, demonstrate traditional practices, and encourage preservation of Macon County’s folk heritage. The 17th annual festival, held on August 19, 2023, was the last organized by FHAMC and Cowee School as a large-scale event. FHAMC continues to pursue its mission through collaborations and smaller heritage programs, including school and seasonal events, while considering future activities related to regional traditions such as quilting, oral history, and gem mining
