The Duisburg Refugee Council, established around 1990, is a dedicated initiative aimed at supporting refugees in the Duisburg area. Originally formed to assist those fleeing the Yugoslavian War, the council is mainly operated by volunteers, alongside professionals working with refugees. The organization offers a wide range of services including free legal assistance in asylum matters, support with bureaucratic processes, securing housing, and medical appointments. They also aid refugees in finding job training and internships, provide language lessons and tutoring, and help families enroll their children in schools.

In addition to direct support for refugees, the Duisburg Refugee Council plays a vital role in supplementing city services, advocating for the needs of new arrivals, and enhancing their integration into the community. Monthly meetings provide a platform for volunteers to exchange ideas, stay updated on legal changes, and improve their support efforts. The council thrives on community involvement and invites further assistance, particularly in light of ongoing challenges such as those posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
