About Freemuse
Freemuse is an independent international non-governmental organization that advocates for freedom of artistic expression and cultural diversity. With United Nations Special Consultative Status to the Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC) and Consultative Status with UNESCO, Freemuse operates within an international human rights and legal framework based on accountability, participation, equality, non-discrimination, and cultural diversity. The organization documents violations of artistic freedom, conducts evidence-based advocacy at international, regional, and national levels, and works towards better protection for all individuals, particularly those at risk.
Freemuse promotes safe and enabling environments for artistic creativity, recognizing the value that art and culture bring to society. They are well-known for their annual flagship report, The State of Artistic Freedom, which is widely referenced by governments, UN officials, academia, and key actors in the cultural and artistic fields. Freemuse works alongside artists, art and cultural organizations, activists, and partners across the globe, campaigning for and supporting individual artists, with a focus on those targeted for their gender, race, or sexual orientation.
They also initiate, grow, and support locally owned networks of artists and cultural workers, empowering them to monitor and defend artistic freedom. The vision of Freemuse is a world where everyone can freely express themselves as artists, create, perform, record, distribute, facilitate, and enjoy art without any impediments or fear of discrimination or persecution. To achieve this, Freemuse aims to improve the legal and policy frameworks and practices of artistic freedom and cultural expression through human rights-based research, advocacy, and campaigns, engaging with artists, activists, and decision-makers.
The core values of Freemuse include respect, diversity, honesty and transparency, professionalism and integrity, equality and understanding, knowledge, creativity and self-expression, and courage. They strive to create a work culture that promotes self-expression and creativity, solidarity, trust, empathy, and respects diversity. Founded in 1998, Freemuse initially focused on music and censorship before expanding its scope in 2011 to advocate for the freedom of artistic expression across all art forms.
They have received numerous awards and prizes for their work defending musicians and artistic freedom. Freemuse's mission is rooted in empowering artists and artistry, even if it means challenging accepted social and political narratives and procedures. They are dedicated to safeguarding the freedom of artistic expression as a central component of the human experience and a fundamental human right
