Fresh Coast Guardians Resource Center helps residents, businesses, nonprofits, and municipalities in the Milwaukee region protect rivers and Lake Michigan by managing rainwater and melting snow. Its goal is to build enough green infrastructure by 2035 to capture 740 million gallons of water each time it rains, reducing water pollution and the risk of basement backups and sewer overflows.
The center explains practical green strategies and shares examples of local projects, from residential rain gardens to municipal bioswales. Recommended approaches include rain barrels and cisterns, native and natural landscaping, trees, downspout disconnection, soil improvements, green roofs, porous pavement, and wetlands. These solutions capture, absorb, or store runoff in settings ranging from homes and gardens to streets and parking areas.
Fresh Coast Guardians encourages people to take action by installing rain barrels or rain gardens and offers information about green infrastructure programs, vendors, events, and local projects. The resource center also provides guidance and answers questions, and shares updates through its newsletter, including information about workshops and funding opportunities.
