Friends of Alfie Martin is an independent charity established in 2002 to honour Alfie Martin and improve care for critically ill babies. Run entirely by volunteers, the charity has no overheads and directs all funds raised to neonatal equipment for the Leeds Centre for Newborn Care, which treats around 1,600 babies each year and serves families across Yorkshire. The centre provides an annual equipment wish list, guiding the charity’s fundraising priorities.
Friends of Alfie Martin has raised £1 million in Alfie’s name and is the centre’s biggest single contributor. Its purchases have included specialist transport units, heart-monitoring equipment, incubators and ventilators—equipment that supports the care of sick and premature newborns. The charity works where possible with manufacturers to secure equipment at the best cost.
Funds are raised through community and charity events, corporate and foundation donations, individual giving, personal fundraising challenges and grant applications. Events include the annual Ladies Only Charity Winter Ball and inclusive community activities.
