Friends of Brightwood

Friends of Brightwood Park is a community organization dedicated to protecting and restoring Brightwood Park in Westfield, New Jersey, while helping people enjoy its natural and historic character. Formed in late 2019 or early 2020, the group works to improve the health of the park’s woodland by removing invasive plants, protecting mature trees, and planting native species. Volunteers meet regularly for stewardship activities, including invasive-plant removal, cleanups, and reforestation projects. The organization also partners with local groups and Rutgers on tree-planting and forest research initiatives.

Friends of Brightwood Park offers educational and recreational programs for children and adults. Children’s nature classes feature themed projects, stories, and guided walks, while seasonal events include hikes and community gatherings. Visitors can join guided history walks exploring the area’s African American heritage, take part in birding activities, or use the park’s trail maps and nature resources. The group shares photographs, field notes, sustainable gardening information, and updates on restoration work, and welcomes community members interested in volunteering, learning, and supporting the park.
