About Fulbright NZ
Fulbright New Zealand, established in 1948, is dedicated to promoting mutual understanding through educational and cultural exchanges between New Zealand and the United States. As part of the Fulbright Programme, which operates in over 155 countries, Fulbright New Zealand offers a range of exchange awards for New Zealanders and Americans. These awards provide opportunities for individuals to study, research, teach, or present their work in each other's country.
The Fulbright Programme, created by US Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946, aims to bring knowledge, reason, and compassion to world affairs, fostering peace and friendship between nations. It has been described as one of the largest and most significant movements of scholars across the globe, funding around 8,000 exchanges per year.
Since its inception, Fulbright New Zealand has granted over 3,150 exchange awards, sending New Zealanders to the US and welcoming Americans to New Zealand. Notable Fulbright alumni include former Prime Minister Sir Wallace Rowling, Nobel-prize winning scientist Alan MacDiarmid, and writer Witi Ihimaera. The organization is jointly funded by the US and New Zealand governments and governed by a diverse Board of Directors
