The Fundação Princesa Dona Maria Amélia is a Portuguese foundation based in Funchal, Madeira, with a history dating back to the nineteenth century. Established on 23 March 1877 by decision of the Swedish Crown, it followed the bequest of the Hospício da Princesa Dona Maria Amélia to Queen Josefina of Sweden and Norway. The hospice had been founded in 1853 to treat people with pulmonary illnesses and was left by Empress D. Amélia de Leuchtenberg, widow of Emperor D. Pedro I of Brazil and King D. Pedro IV of Portugal.
Today, the foundation’s listed services include a nursing home and day centre, as well as the Rainha Silvia nursery school. Its work also encompasses institutional partnerships and cooperation: in 2019, it signed an agreement with the University of Madeira to pursue joint initiatives, particularly in professional and social development. The foundation shares news, documents and information about its protocols, and provides contact details for its Funchal location.
