Fundação Gil Eannes is the organization responsible for preserving and presenting the Gil Eannes hospital ship as a cultural and historical attraction in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. Built at the city’s shipyards, the vessel began operating as a hospital ship in 1955, supporting the Portuguese cod-fishing fleet in the waters off Newfoundland and Greenland. After the fleet was decommissioned, the ship was left to deteriorate in Lisbon. In 1998, the foundation rescued it from scrap and brought it back to Viana do Castelo. Following cleaning and restoration, the ship opened to the public as a museum and visitor attraction.
Visitors can explore the ship’s museum spaces and exhibition rooms, while the site also includes a meeting room and a souvenir shop. The foundation offers guided visits for school groups and educational activities, and operates an online shop featuring its products. The museum ship is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The foundation also shares news, events, and visitor information through its website and social media.
