En Abril de 2021 Esteban Bullrich, exsenador y exministro de Educación de Argentina, fue diagnosticado con Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrófica (ELA). Inspirados por su fortaleza, su familia y amigos decidieron crear una fundación para ayudar a mejorar la calidad de vida de quienes, como Esteban, atraviesan esta enfermedad, desde el acompañamiento, la contención, la investigación y la educación. La ELA es una enfermedad degenerativa del sistema nervioso de causa desconocida en la cual se afectan las neuronas motoras del cerebro y de la médula espinal, que causa una parálisis progresiva generalizada de los músculos de los 4 miembros, los músculos fonatorios, de la deglución y los músculos respiratorios. Aún se desconocen las causas que la provocan. Solo entre un 5 y un 10% de las personas que padecen ELA se deben a causas hereditarias. La ELA esporádica ocurre al azar, y representa del 90 al 95% de los casos. La prevalencia o cantidad de personas que viven con ELA al mismo tiempo es aproximadamente 7 de cada 100.000 habitantes. Se estima que en Argentina afecta a 3.000 personas por año.

Fundación Esteban Bullrich is an Argentine nonprofit established by the family and friends of former senator and education minister Esteban Bullrich after his 2021 diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The foundation works to improve the quality of life of people living with ALS and their families, bringing together patients, caregivers, health professionals, researchers, and partner organizations.
