About Funda Wande
Funda Wande is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to equipping teachers in South Africa with the necessary tools and training to teach reading for meaning and calculating with confidence to students in Grades R-3. With a strong focus on early literacy, Funda Wande offers a range of print and video materials that are available in the languages spoken and understood by the students. These materials are evidence-based, policy-aligned, and independently evaluated, ensuring high quality and effectiveness.
Funda Wande's goal is for all South African children to be able to read for meaning by the end of grade 3, and for all Grade R-3 teachers to have the skills and resources to teach reading effectively by 2030. To achieve this, they develop tailored courses specifically for early literacy and teaching reading in African languages. These courses are available as a formal qualification through Rhodes University or can be accessed for free on their website.
