Guatemala is known for its rich biodiversity, but it also faces continuous and often complicated conservation challenges.

Many species, especially endemic ones, are at a critical risk of extinction due to habitat loss, weak legislation, lack of capacity for biodiversity protection, unsustainable practices, and widespread poverty. Fundesgua believes that biodiversity conservation and human development go hand in hand, and they work towards this goal through applied research, education, and the protection of wildlife ecosystems and the communities they engage with. They specifically focus on the conservation of the Scorpion Lizard (Heloderma charlesbogerti) and the Arboreal Lizards of the Abronia genus, which are both critically endangered.
