The Furniture History Society (FHS) is a registered charity founded in 1964 to promote the study of furniture across all periods, places and types. Its work aims to increase knowledge and appreciation of furniture and to support the preservation of historic furniture and its records. The Society brings together people interested in furniture history through membership, events, publications and research initiatives.
Members can explore historical furniture and take part in a programme that includes annual lectures, study days and online courses. The FHS also publishes a journal, books and newsletters, and provides grants and support for research and professional development. Its Early Career Group helps foster the development of younger members, while the British and Irish Furniture Makers Online (BIFMO) project supports research into furniture makers. The Society welcomes new and renewing members and invites donations to help fund BIFMO, its Journal and early-career development. Through these activities, the FHS encourages informed engagement with furniture history and helps sustain the study and preservation of this cultural heritage.
