About Fur Rondy
Fur Rondy, also known as the Fur Rendezvous, is the nation's premier winter festival, capturing the pioneering spirit of Alaskans since 1935. Anchorage's rich history and tradition are deeply connected to this annual event. In the 1930s, Anchorage was a small town with no modern amenities, and winters were harsh.
Vern Johnson, the founder of Fur Rondy, decided to organize a 3-day winter festival coinciding with the arrival of miners and trappers in town. The festival began as a sports tournament and has grown into a 12-day extravaganza featuring skiing, hockey, basketball, boxing, and even a children's sled dog race. Visitors from around the world attend Fur Rondy to experience iconic events like the Official Rondy Fur Auction, the World Championship Sled Dog Race, the Blanket Toss, and the Rondy Carnival.
Anchorage becomes a hub of excitement and entertainment, showcasing Alaska's vibrant culture and captivating traditions. Whether participating in snowshoe softball, witnessing the Grand Parade, or embracing the milder version of Pamplona's Running of the Bulls called the Running of the Reindeer, Fur Rondy offers wild and wacky fun for all ages. Join us for an unforgettable winter celebration that has become a highly anticipated annual tradition
