GDSA, which stands for Gaborone Declaration for Sustainability in Africa, is an alliance dedicated to green development in Africa. The declaration originated from a 2012 summit attended by visionary corporate leaders and heads of states from nine African countries, including Botswana. The summit aimed to address the historical pattern of unsustainable natural resource exploitation in Africa and promote sustainable growth, environmental integrity, and social capital.

The GDSA encourages governments and non-governmental entities to take action in three key areas. Firstly, integrating the value of natural capital into national accounting and corporate planning processes. Secondly, transitioning agriculture, extractive industries, fisheries, and other natural capital industries towards practices that promote sustainable employment, food security, and the protection of natural capital.

Lastly, building knowledge, capacity, and policy networks to foster leadership and positive change in sustainable development. The Secretariat for the GDSA is hosted by the Government of Botswana and was delegated to Conservation International (CI). Although their Memorandum of Understanding has expired, CI has provided technical support to the GDSA.

By joining forces, GDSA member countries aim to drive sustainable development and create a greener future for Africa
