Gammeldansk Ordbog

Gammeldansk Ordbog is a scholarly dictionary dedicated to the medieval Danish language, covering the period from approximately 1100 to 1515. This resource is part of the ordnet.dk family of dictionaries and provides users with insights into older Danish, connecting terms with their modern equivalents as found in Den Danske Ordbog and Ordbog over det danske Sprog. Although still under development, it currently offers access to a substantial collection of around 29,000 dictionary articles, with completed articles providing essential information about word class, earliest occurrences, and contemporary forms.

The Gammeldansk Ordbog is edited by Det Danske Sprog- og Litteraturselskab, with support from the Danish Ministry of Culture. An extensive collection of over 900,000 citation slips, crucial for the dictionary's editing process, is also available, allowing users to search by various criteria, including source, period, and subject area. By making medieval linguistic resources accessible, Gammeldansk Ordbog is an invaluable tool for anyone interested in the evolution of the Danish language.
