Gannaane

Gannaane Organization is a nonprofit, nonreligious nongovernmental organization founded in Helsinki, Finland, in 2002 by Somali diaspora professionals. It moved its operations to Somalia in 2004 and now works across southern and central Somalia, particularly in Jubaland, Southwest, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle, while also operating in Finland. Its work aims to contribute to a Horn of Africa free from disease, hunger, illiteracy, and poverty.

Gannaane supports communities through programs in health, education, malaria prevention, water, sanitation and hygiene, food security, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental protection. Its services include farmer training, farming inputs, drought-resistant crops, composting, agroforestry, and capacity building, with particular attention to women, internally displaced people, and other vulnerable groups. Environmental initiatives address desertification and land degradation through tree nurseries, seedling distribution, tree planting, and community awareness campaigns. The Ramaad projects have also promoted sustainable land use and alternatives to charcoal-based livelihoods. Gannaane emphasizes community participation, partnerships, transparency, and accountability, supported by independent audits and ongoing efforts to strengthen its systems.
