About Ganshoin
Ganshoin is a historic Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple in Obuse, Nagano Prefecture, known for its connections to ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, samurai Fukushima Masanori, and haiku poet Kobayashi Issa. Its best-known attraction is Hokusai’s ceiling painting, the “Happōnirami Phoenix,” a monumental work spanning 21 tatami mats. Created late in the artist’s life, the phoenix is designed to appear to meet visitors’ gaze from every angle, and the painting has never been repainted.
Visitors can also see Fukushima Masanori’s mausoleum and the pond associated with Issa’s famous poem about a frog contest, as well as enjoy the temple grounds and seasonal scenery. Ganshoin welcomes individual visitors and groups, with admission required to enter the main hall and view the ceiling artwork; the garden can be visited free of charge. Explanations of the painting are offered every 30 minutes, and audio guides are available in several languages.
The temple provides visitor information, group reservations, access guidance, and arrangements for media inquiries and image use
