About Gaois
Gaois is a renowned research group operating within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at DCU. Comprising lecturers, researchers, and postgraduate students, our primary goal is to preserve and revitalize the Irish language and culture through the creation of innovative and reliable resources. Since our establishment in 2004, we have successfully undertaken various projects, beginning with the development of the Focal project, which later became t.
eirm. ie. This project aimed to establish a comprehensive database of new Irish language terminology.
Our expertise in terminology expanded further through the LEX project, where we provided terminology support for the EU Institutions. We also dedicated our efforts to digitizing the Ainm biography collection, resulting in the creation of the Logainm system, an inclusive platform for administering and sharing placename data. Additionally, we have collaborated with Dúchas on the National Folklore Collection Digitization Project, and are currently working on the Hidden Heritages project.
One of our key endeavors is the development of the National Corpus for Irish, furthering our mission to advance our understanding of the Irish language and its historical and future significance by deploying cutting-edge technology. At Gaois, our work is characterized by quality, openness, and accessibility. We strive to facilitate access, interpretation, and interconnection by leveraging our academic interests and collaborating with partner organizations.
Notably, we receive funding from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Foras na Gaeilge, AHRC/IRC, and the National Folklore Foundation. Join us in our quest to preserve and explore the richness of the Irish language and culture. For more information, visit our website at gaois.
