Gariyan Silat

Gariyan Silat is a martial arts and self-defence school based in Nundah, Queensland, offering practical training rooted in a traditional Malaysian system. The style originated in the jungles of northern Malaysia in the 19th century, when the Gariyan family developed it from Silat Patani. Its focus is on straightforward, methodical techniques rather than mystification, with training intended to help students respond to larger, stronger or multiple attackers.

The Gariyan system covers close-quarters combat, including striking, grappling, joint and nerve manipulation, weapon use and defence against weapons, as well as de-escalation and escape. The school offers open adult classes for beginners through to advanced students, welcoming people of different abilities and fitness levels. Evening classes run Monday to Thursday at 6 pm, with personal training available by appointment. Private sessions with head instructor Joshua Grace allow students to focus on specific aspects of their practice. Gariyan Silat presents training as a way to build fitness, practical skills, mental resilience and discipline, while supporting students’ confidence and personal development.
