**Brand Description: Gartenschläfer Conservation Initiative**
The Gartenschläfer, or garden dormouse, is a small relative of the dormouse family, recognized for its distinctive “Zorro-mask” pattern. Indigenous to Europe, particularly prevalent in Germany, this species has faced dramatic population declines over the past decades, leading to extinction in many areas. Launched as part of the "Spurensuche Gartenschläfer" project, the initiative seeks to secure the survival of the Gartenschläfer in Germany and prevent further loss of biodiversity.
Collaborating with conservationists and researchers from the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND), Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, and the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research, this project aims to uncover the reasons behind the declining populations of this beloved species. The initiative also emphasizes community engagement, providing resources such as garden tips, nesting box construction guidelines, and emergency contact information, aimed at encouraging public participation in conservation efforts. As the Wildlife of the Year 2023, the Gartenschläfer's protection is a shared responsibility, inviting everyone to contribute to its preservation.
