About GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility
GBIF, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, is an international network and data infrastructure funded by governments to provide open access to information about life on Earth. It brings together biodiversity data published by institutions and contributors worldwide, making records available to anyone, anywhere. The platform offers tools to explore occurrence records, taxa, datasets, publishers and related resources, alongside guidance on using its data and technical documentation, including an API guide and FAQ.
GBIF supports research, monitoring and evidence-based decision-making across science, technology and policy. Its data contributes to studies of climate change, invasive alien species and human health, and is used in species distribution mapping and assessments for the IUCN Red List. The organization also provides hosted portals for national, institutional, regional and thematic communities, and supports capacity-building programmes and projects that help mobilize and use biodiversity data. These initiatives include work in Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, Asia and Northern Eurasia.
