The Southwest Biological Science Center measures effects of Glen Canyon Dam operations on downstream Colorado River resources. We also work to understand river ecosystems in the southwest U.S. and conduct research on Lake Powell in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and National Park Service Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

About USGS
The Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC) conducts critical research focused on the impacts of Glen Canyon Dam operations on the Colorado River's ecology and resources. Partnering with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the National Park Service, SBSC aims to understand the dynamics of river ecosystems, including comprehensive studies on Lake Powell. Their work is instrumental in monitoring water quality, biological responses, and the long-term ecological effects of water management practices that influence this watershed.
Part of the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC), SBSC develops and implements scientific studies to assess the effects of hydropower operations on river conditions and native species. The center plays a pivotal role in the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program, providing valuable data that informs policy decisions aimed at preserving the natural environment and enhancing recreational experiences within the Grand Canyon National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Through innovative research techniques including high-flow experiments and remote sensing, SBSC fosters a deeper understanding of complex river systems in the Southwest U.S.
