GECKO

GECKO is a European research and training network focused on making artificial intelligence accountable, responsible, and transparent, particularly in support of environmental sustainability and the European Green Deal. Funded through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the project brings together universities, research institutes, and private companies from across Europe. Its interdisciplinary work combines social sciences, information sciences, and engineering to develop AI that reflects how people interact with technology and avoids harmful or biased outcomes.

GECKO’s research explores explainable AI, machine learning, causal modelling, and ways to incorporate social understanding into technical systems. A key application is connected home technology, where the project aims to support energy efficiency and lower-energy living through designs developed with technology users. Its methods include sustainable living labs and crowdsourced virtual labs, encouraging collaboration between researchers and communities.

The network also supports 15 early-stage researchers through research supervision, mentorship, and training. GECKO shares its work through publications, datasets, and software, while seeking to build lasting European collaboration in responsible AI research.
