The Mingei Theatre Company, or 劇団民藝, was founded in 1950 by Shu Takizawa, Masao Shimizu, Juji Ueno, and Shiro Okakura with the aim of creating theatre art that would bring joy and inspiration to people's lives. With a strong foundation in the mainstream of Shingeki or New Drama, the company quickly established itself as a leading force in the post-war theatre scene in Japan. Notable productions include Chekhov's The Seagull, which was their first performance, and the critically acclaimed play In the Flame of the Lamp, based on the life of Vincent van Gogh.
Throughout the years, the company has showcased a wide range of works, from realism to experimental plays, including masterpieces by authors such as Arthur Miller, Anne Frank, and Yukio Mishima. Today, The Mingei Theatre Company continues to engage audiences with thought-provoking and contemporary productions, while also preserving the rich tradition of ensemble theater. With a talented ensemble of around 150 members, they present approximately four productions per year in Tokyo and tour extensively throughout Japan.
As they move forward, they aim to continue delivering the joy of experiencing theatre and provoke discussions on what it means to live in the modern world
