The International Gemini Observatory operates two 8.1-meter optical and infrared telescopes on Maunakea in Hawai‘i and Cerro Pachón in Chile. Together, these sites provide access to the entire sky and support astronomical research by communities in six partner countries: the United States, Canada, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Korea. Gemini is operated by NSF NOIRLab and managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy under a cooperative agreement with the US National Science Foundation.
Gemini provides access to observing time through programs including semester, large and long, and fast-turnaround proposals. Its services and resources support researchers throughout the observing process, from preparing proposals and requesting or monitoring observations to retrieving and reducing data. The observatory also offers guidance, schedules, scientific resources, instrument information, and helpdesk support. Its instrumentation includes optical and infrared facilities such as GMOS, NIRI, GNIRS, GHOST, and SCORPIO. Beyond research operations, Gemini shares astronomical discoveries through press releases, publications, images, videos, educational activities, virtual tours, and public events.
