They also collaborate with existing vertebrate nomenclature committees to ensure consistent gene naming across species.

Using a software pipeline based on the HGNC Consensus Orthology Predictions (HCOP) tool, VGNC automatically transfers human nomenclature to other species for genes with predicted orthologs. For genes without consensus ortholog predictions, naming is done through a combination of automated processes and manual curation, considering factors like synteny, phylogeny, and expert advice from specialist advisors. Initially starting with chimpanzee, Genenames has expanded to name genes in horse, cattle, dog, cat, macaque, and several other species.
