Genes for Good

Genes for Good is a genetics and health research study associated with the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Led by principal investigator Gonçalo Abecasis, the project aims to build and analyze a large database combining genetic information with health and behavioral data. Its research seeks to improve understanding of the biological causes of common diseases and inform future treatment and prevention efforts.

The study has engaged participants through an app, where they can contribute health histories and survey responses, including daily tracking and information about health conditions. The app also provides visualizations of information participants share, enabling them to explore aspects of their health and behavior and compare their responses with those of other participants. Participants may also request a download of their uninterpreted genetic data and learn about genetic ancestry.

Genes for Good has supported research on topics including tobacco and alcohol use, intelligence, and public engagement in genetics. The study website notes that, due to capacity limits, it is not currently collecting survey data.
